Flagship Leapmotor D19 SUV unveiled: EV and range-extender hybrid powertrain options for three-row BYD Sealion 8 and Kia EV9 fighter

Leapmotor has revealed a three-row SUV called the D19 that looks ready-made for Australia.

It shapes as a rival for the likes of the all-electric Kia EV9 and Hyundai Ioniq 9, incoming BYD Sealion 8 and other large family SUVs such as the Toyota Kluger Hybrid.

The new Leapmotor D19 is set for a launch in China in the first half of next year and could be on the menu for an Australian debut before the end of next year.

When it arrives, the new Leapmotor SUV will be available with both an all-electric powertrain and the brand’s latest plug-in range extender hybrid tech.

In China it will get options such as an onboard oxygen generator for buyers who live in high altitudes.

The D19 has been designed under the car-maker’s Technology Natural Aesthetics 2.0 design language that’s already been employed on the mid-size C10 and new smaller B10 SUV.

It features a pair of slim LED headlamps interlinked with a light bar that sits above two small square light clusters within the bumper.

Below, is a large grille that stretches the entire width of the car with active shutters that can open for extra cooling.

At the rear, it appears there’s a full-width LED light bar with a battery recharging counter inbuilt.

Measuring 5200mm long and 2000mm wide, the D19 boasts a generous 3100mm wheelbase.

Leapmotor is expected to offer the D19 in six-, seven and eight-seat configurations.

The all-electric D19 comes with dual-motors producing 540kW of power that combine with a large 115kWh battery pack that’s said to provide a range of 720km on the Chinese CLTC test cycle.

Despite its large size, Leapmotor says the D19 will be capable of a 0-100km/h dash in less than 3.0 seconds.

Charging will be enhanced by powerful 1000-volt electrics that will see more than 350km of range added after just 15 minutes.

For those not ready for an EV, the new range-extender hybrid (REEV) will overcome any range or charging infrastructure anxiety.

Using a less powerful 800-volt electrical architecture, Leapmotor says the hybrid D19 gets dual-motors that produce 400kW.

Featuring a large 80.3kWh battery pack, the D19 REEV comes with a claimed all-electric range of 500km.

DC fast charging is said to result in a 30-80 per cent top-up in 15 minutes.

Set to introduce the brand’s most-sophisticated driver assist tech yet, the D19 comes with both a roof-mounted Lidar module that is powered by advanced dual Qualcomm Snapdragon 8797 chipsets.

They will also run the onboard tech that will feature an AI-powered onboard assistant.

Finally, if you’re wondering about the new oxygen generator, it can enrich cabin air by up to 8L per minute for those who live in high altitude regions, such as Tibet.

There’s no word on pricing and arrival timing in Australia, but it could be on-sale here as soon as 2026, joining the C10, B10 and B5 in Leapmotor showrooms.
