Toyota has accelerated its multi-pathway strategy for global vehicle electrification with the launch of production at its brand-new battery plant in Liberty, North Carolina. This marks Toyota’s eleventh U.S. facility and its first battery plant outside of Japan. The nearly $14 billion investment is expected to generate up to 5,100 new American jobs.
Reaffirming its long-standing commitment to the United States, Toyota also announced plans to invest an additional $10 billion over the next five years to advance future mobility. With this pledge, the company’s total U.S. investment will approach $60 billion since it began operations nearly 70 years ago.
The Liberty site spans 1,850 acres and will be capable of producing 30 GWh annually at full capacity. Designed as Toyota’s hub for lithium-ion battery development and production, the state-of-the-art facility will feature 14 production lines supporting hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), battery electric vehicles (BEVs), and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). This milestone marks one of Toyota’s most significant investments in the U.S. and delivers a major economic boost to North Carolina.
Batteries manufactured at the Liberty plant will power models including the Camry HEV, Corolla Cross HEV, RAV4 HEV, and a forthcoming all-electric three-row BEV – the first of its kind to be built by Toyota in the United States. The plant is already shipping HEV modules to Toyota Kentucky and Mazda Toyota Manufacturing in Alabama, with additional production lines scheduled to come online by 2030. Beyond its industrial role, the facility is designed to foster community, offering amenities such as on-site childcare, a pharmacy, a medical clinic, and a fitness center for team members.
Toyota’s commitment extends beyond manufacturing. By partnering with schools and educators across the region, the company is investing in workforce development and educational initiatives to help shape the future of the Triad. Through these efforts, Toyota continues to dedicate its time, talent, and resources to building stronger communities and preparing the next generation of American workers.
Toyota’s push into electrified pickups has arrived in Thailand with the Hilux BEV, a battery-electric reimagining of the country’s best-selling workhorse that keeps the Hilux’s rugged DNA while switching the drivetrain to fully electric power. At first glance the Hilux BEV looks familiar – familiar toughness, high ground clearance, and functional cargo bed – yet the hood hides a quiet, torque-rich electric…
